education:

  • B.S. in Geobiology, The Schreyer Honors College at Penn State

professional activities:

I am a candidate for an M.S. in Ecology at Penn State University studying with Dr. Robert Brooks of the Geography Department. I will be investigating coarse woody debris dynamics in disturbed and reference floodplain ecosystems in an attempt to understand how these environmental features function and provide valuable services to human communities.

As an undergraduate studying at Penn State, I completed an honors thesis in hydrogeology with Dr. Kamini Singha of the Geology Department (now at the Colorado School of Mines). To complete this project, I analyzed previously-collected temperature data from a small stream in the dry bed of Lake Perez, located at the Shaver’s Creek Environmental Center. The goal of this project was to determine whether or not the thick layer of clay found on the lakebed was precluding communication between ground and surface waters. At the conclusion of the analysis, a paper (unpublished) and presentation were prepared as requirements for graduation.

Other notable undergraduate activities include an independent study on nutrient loading within the Limnology Department and a semester spent as an undergraduate TA with Ryan Baxter of the Geography Department.

Following graduation, I spent two years working as an assistant research scientist with L.F. Lambert Spawn Company in Coatesville, PA. There, I assisted in developing and implementing lab protocols for the production and preparation of fungi-based biotech products. I also assisted in an overhaul of the company’s database system, and completed a small study on pesticide efficacy in a pest fly species. A short paper (unpublished) was prepared following this study, and a talk was given at an industry growers’ meeting in Kennett Square, PA.
